INS Vikrant: An exclusive peek into specifications of indigenous aircraft carrier

Vikrant at the Cochin Shipyard. The carrier is named after her illustrious predecessor, India’s 1st Aircraft Carrier which played a vital role in the 1971 war. Built at a cost of Rs 20,000 crore, at the Cochin Shipyard, this indigenous Aircraft Carrier IAC Vikrant is the largest and most complex warship ever built in India's maritime history. In its very first sea trial last August, INS Vikrant achieved a top speed of 28 knots, an extreme rarity for a defence vessel of this size and power anywhere in the world. The ship is powered by four Gas Turbines totalling 88 MW power, INS Vikrant has around 2,200 compartments, designed for a crew of around 1,600 that include specialised cabins to accommodate women officers and sailors. NS Vikrant is capable of supporting 30 aircraft Advanced Light Helicopters and Light Combat Aircraft to be deployed on the ship.
