The Indian Air Force is moving to enhance the operational capabilities of its elite Garud Commando Force through the induction of man-portable micro UAV systems, designed specifically for high-altitude and extreme terrain operations. An RFI has been issued by the IAF outlines the requirement for ultra-light drones weighing under 25 kilograms, compact enough to be carried in a backpack during long-range missions. The systems are intended to provide real-time surveillance and reconnaissance support to Garud commandos engaged in high-risk roles such as counter-terrorism and special reconnaissance. The operational focus is on environments like the Himalayas, where altitudes exceed 16,000 feet and weather conditions can range from -20°C to over 50°C. The UAVs are expected to perform reliably under these extremes while delivering tactical intelligence, including detection of human targets up to 1 kilometre and vehicle tracking at approximately 1.5 kilometres. Key requirements also include low acoustic signatures below 40 decibels for stealth operations, anti-jamming capabilities, and functionality in GPS-denied environments, reflecting the increasing role of electronic warfare in modern conflicts. Vertical take-off and landing capability is another critical feature, enabling deployment from unprepared and rugged terrain. The move underscores a broader doctrinal shift towards soldier-centric technology, where smaller units are equipped with advanced tools to operate more independently and effectively. It also aligns with India’s push for indigenous defence manufacturing, with domestic firms expected to play a key role in developing these systems under the “Make in India” framework. For the Garud Commandos, such systems could significantly enhance situational awareness, operational flexibility, and mission effectiveness in some of the most challenging combat environments.
