Former Ambassador Advises India to Stay Alert, Let Nepal Handle Politics Amid Ongoing Turmoil

Former Indian Ambassador to Nepal, Rakesh Sood, has commented on India’s response to the ongoing unrest in Nepal. He pointed out that India has wisely avoided getting drawn into Nepal’s political turmoil, unlike past situations where it became a target of criticism. Sood stressed that the current focus is on securing India’s borders, closely monitoring developments, and observing the emergence of new leadership in Nepal. While acknowledging the protests stem from widespread public discontent, he underlined that resolving Nepal’s internal issues is ultimately the responsibility of its citizens. India’s approach prioritizes vigilance, safety, and non-interference, ensuring national security without directly intervening in Nepal’s domestic politics.

Political tensions in West Bengal escalated dramatically as violent clashes broke out in Kolkata shortly before Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a massive rally at Brigade Parade Ground. Supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the ruling All India Trinamool Congress clashed near Girish Park, with reports of stone-pelting, injuries and damaged vehicles. The residence of West Bengal minister Shashi Panja was also reportedly targeted during the chaos. BJP leaders accused the Mamata Banerjee government of attempting to disrupt the rally, while TMC denied the charges and blamed BJP supporters for provoking violence. At the rally, Modi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and said the countdown for the end of TMC rule in the state had begun.
