The Brookfield Zoo near Chicago has announced the birth of a male addax. The zoo says the birth of this African antelope is significant because the species is critically endangered and on the brink of extinction in the wild. The male calf was born on July 2nd and spends most of its time in a nesting area but has begun to venture outdoors with its mother. According to the zoo, the addax was once was found in large numbers across vast areas of the Sahara Desert. However, its numbers have dwindled, mainly due to illegal hunting for its meat, horns, and hide.
