West Asia stood on the brink of a fresh and dangerous escalation as an unprecedented American military buildup signaled that the conflict had entered a far more volatile phase. Nearly 57,000 US troops were spread across bases in Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq and the wider Gulf, the largest deployment in the region since the Iraq War. This was no routine posture; it was a formation designed for multiple contingencies. At the heart of the emerging strategy was a tiny island with outsized importance - Kharg Island - the nerve centre of Iran’s oil lifeline, through which nearly 90% of its crude exports flowed. After earlier US airstrikes reportedly hit military positions there while leaving oil infrastructure untouched, the conversation appeared to have shifted from bombing to the far more provocative idea of seizing the island.
