Israeli defense officials now suggest that Hamas's Gaza tunnel network spans between 350 and 450 miles, surpassing the previous Israel Defense Forces' estimate of 250 miles. The New York Times reported this, highlighting the significant discrepancy. Particularly, about 100 miles of tunnels are believed to exist under Khan Younis in southern Gaza, where intense fighting is ongoing as IDF seeks Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar. Two Israeli defense officials, speaking anonymously, disclosed approximately 5,700 shafts leading to the tunnels. The report underscores that these estimates lack independent confirmation, and there are differing assessments among Israeli officials regarding the extent of the subterranean passages.
