Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has embraced the imagery of the “elephant, dragon, and bear” to describe the growing alignment between India, China, and Russia. He said the three great civilisations recognise shared interests in economic development, social welfare, and stability, even if their policies are not perfectly aligned. This echoes the long-standing vision of the Russia-India-China Troika, first proposed in the 1990s. Soon after, President Vladimir Putin expanded on the symbolism, recalling how the elephant and dragon were mentioned earlier, the bear was later added, and then he noted that the world’s largest tiger — the Russian Ussuri tiger — also stands tall. Together, these metaphors are being seen as a signal of unity in Eurasia, with the West — the “eagle” — watching closely.
