SC Flags Border Delay: 127 Km Land Not Handed To BSF, Fencing Stuck
A major border security issue has come under sharp judicial scrutiny, as the Supreme Court of India and the Calcutta High Court question delays in fencing the India–Bangladesh border in West Bengal. While nearly 78% of the feasible border has been fenced, around 435 km still remains incomplete, largely due to land acquisition and handover issues. The situation escalated after it was revealed that even after compensation has been paid, over 127 km of land has not been handed over to the Border Security Force, delaying critical fencing work. The High Court has pulled up the state over non-compliance, rejected administrative excuses, and even imposed penalties on officials. With rising concerns over infiltration, smuggling, and national security, the case highlights serious gaps in coordination and execution. The next hearing is expected to bring more clarity on accountability and timelines.
