Rashmika Mandanna’s recent deepfake video made a lot of headlines and have started some important discussions online. The actress addressed the controversy by taking to social media and penning her reaction in a long note. The controversy has now got the attention of the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology of India Rajeev Chandrashekhar as well. He took to X, previously known as Twitter and wrote ‘PM @narendramodi ji's Govt is committed to ensuring Safety and Trust of all DigitalNagriks using Internet. Under the IT rules notified in April, 2023 - it is a legal obligation for platforms to ensure no misinformation is posted by any user AND ensure that when reported by any user or govt, misinformation is removed in 36 hrs. If platforms do not comply wth this, rule 7 will apply and platforms can be taken to court by aggrieved person under provisions of IPC. Deep fakes are latest and even more dangerous and damaging form of misinformation and needs to be dealt with by platforms.’ Rashmika has also thanked celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Naga Chaitanya, Chinmayi Sripada and others for supporting her. Addressing the controversy, while Big B wrote ‘This is a strong case for legal’, Naga Chaitanya penned ‘It’s truly disheartening to see how technology is being misused and the thought of what this can progress to in the future is even scarier. Action has to be taken and some kind of law has to be enforced to protect people who have and will be a victim to this .Strength to you (Rashmika).’ Even actress Mrunal Thakur showed her support for Rashmika Mandanna by thanking her for speaking up about the important issue. ‘Everyday there are morphed, edited videos of female actors floating around on internet zooming into inappropriate body parts.
