Meghna Gulzar's film "Chhapaak" gained a lot of praise for telling the true story of acid attack survivor Laxmi Agarwal, portrayed by Deepika Padukone. However, the movie faced some trouble when Deepika Padukone unexpectedly went to Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) during the CAA-NRC protests, just three days before the film was set to release. In a recent interview with Indian Express, director Meghna Gulzar admitted that Deepika Padukone's visit had a big impact on the film.Gulzar explained, "It's quite obvious. Yes, it affected the film. The focus shifted from acid violence, which was the film's main message, to something else. So, it definitely affected the film. There's no denying that." The controversy around the film moved the discussion from the important topic of acid violence to the broader political issues related to the JNU protests."Chhapaak" tells the tough story of Malti, played by Deepika Padukone, as she deals with the aftermath of a terrible acid attack, showcasing her strength and fight for justice. The film aimed to bring attention to the serious issue of acid violence and highlight the real struggles faced by survivors like Laxmi Agarwal. For those who may not know, Deepika Padukone's visit to JNU in 2020 happened while student leaders were addressing a gathering to condemn an attack on university students by masked individuals. Padukone stood in support with the students at the Sabarmati T-point, where a public meeting was organized by JNU alumni. She didn't speak at the gathering and left after an hour.Looking forward, Meghna Gulzar is getting ready for her next project, "Sam Bahadur."
