With 3,493 fresh cases on Friday Maharashtra surpassed 1 lakh covid-19 cases. A total of 1,01,141 cases recorded from the state which is highest in the country. Along with cases, the state saw 127 deaths on Friday taking the toll to 3,717 deaths in the state. It took 77 days to reach first 50,000 cases since the first case was reported on March 9. The second 50,000 cases, however, have come at a worrying pace—just 19 days. In 12 days of June alone, the state has added 30,000 cases. The pace is worrying. While Maharashtra accounts for more than a third of the country’s coronavirus case burden, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region itself accounts for 75% of the disease burden in the state. The government claims the state used lockdown to control the spread of the virus and also to add to capacity.
