Chandrashekharan, the tusker known among tribals as
Pilandi is being tamed at the Kodanad elephant camp for the past four months.
Around 50 tribals mostly women and children from Sambarcode arrived at Kodanad
to visit the elephant, which they consider an incarnation of god. The elephant
would be taken out of the wooden cage after the completion of six month-long
training. The elephant was captured from Attapady following complaints of
damaging crops. Interestingly, the elephant got its name Pilandi from a tribal,
whom it killed. Even after seven similar killings, tribals continue to adore
and love their God which made them go on a ‘pilgrimage’ to Abhayaranyam
Elephant camp. Chandrashekharan is the name given to the elephant at the
training camp.
