Chennai's oldest church celebrates its 200th foundation day

On 6th April, St Andrew’s Church, one of the oldest in the city, will celebrate its 200th foundation day. It was on 6th April 1818 that the foundation stone of the church was laid. The foundation stone was stamped with a brass plate holding an inscription in English and Latin. The celebration will begin with a Thanksgiving service highlighting the architectural heritage of the building as well as its significance through the years.A commemorative booklet will be released during this service. The church, which was consecrated in 1821, and follows the Scottish Presbyterian tradition, stands on a foundation of 150 wells on what was once a marshy flood plain to the south of the Cooum.
