How was that recent singing experience with actor Dhanush on stage for Vaathi song?

Most of my Tamil hit songs are from Dhanush sir’s movies. Innum Konjam Neram, Enna Solla, Nee Paartha Vizhigal, Venpani Malare, Paarthen, Sirukki Vaasam, and now, Vaa Vaathi. In fact, except with Innum Konjam and Sirukki Vaasam, Dhanush sir recommended the music director to use my voice. I’m always grateful to him for that.

Since you have been a judge on a singing reality show, tell us how music is evolving with the young generation?

“So every generation they connect with music that is preferred era. I am a 90s kid so I learnt the music from Ilaiyaraaja sir and AR Rahman sir. Because my parents are in music my mother is a big singer and my dad a big music lover. I heard music that is from the 60s to 80s in film, Talking about reality show super singers the contestant should showcase a variety of songs and different types of style and it is unbelievable that this generation is very talented.”

You performed your first solo concert in Chennai. How was the experience?

Chennai is where I was born, and it’s where my dreams were born. So, performing my first solo gig here, to an audience that came solely for me, was very special. I feel loved and blessed. The response was much more than I had expected. The energy throughout the show was great, and the audience stayed till the end. It meant so much to me.

Are you planning to do more live concerts henceforth?

I’ve always been active in the live performances. However, Shweta Mohan Live was my first solo act in the city. The charm, excitement, and adrenaline rush that a live performance can provide cannot be matched. Live is the best way that a musician and a fan can exchange energy and love. Speaking to a person on the phone is never as good as sitting down face-to-face and talking to them. Live performances are like that.

What’s your most favourite song that you would never miss performing in front of your fans?

Among my songs, Innum Konjam has always been a crowd's favourite. In all my events, even if it’s not a musical concert, the audience would not let me go without singing it. Now, it is Vaa Vaathi, and I love how the audience also starts singing especially the children!

Who were your biggest musical influences growing up, and how have they shaped your style of singing?

I grew up watching and admiring my mother (Sujatha) for the work she does. She is certainly my biggest influence. Apart from her, I am fortunate to have grown up watching Dasa Mama (Dr KJ Yesudas). His dedication and Samarpan to music have inspired me on a subconscious level. The way he balanced film music, classical music, and personal life is what I admire the most about him.

You and your mother (Sujatha) look like twin sisters, how much do you love your mother singing?

She laughs and says: “This is unfair. Sister okay why twin sister, it’s a compliment for her. I am waiting to happen with my daughter and Me. Yes, I love to hear my mother's song, she is best.”
