Like most Mumbaiites, TV actor Nikkhil Arya too has been curious about the security measures in the city. He got an opportunity on his birthday recently to find out and he certainly wasnt amused with what he saw. Nikkhil was on his way to Pune to spend the day with his parents. He was carrying his air rifle along, so he decided to take a local train to Dadar.
But he was shocked when nobody stopped him or asked him about the rifle even at the crowded Dadar station.
I carried my rifle on my shoulder and was dressed in casual clothes, wearing a cap and my shades. Actually in some ways resembling the b******* who committed the impotent act on 26/11! To my surprise and utter disbelief I wasnt even asked once by a single policewala as to what I was doing with the rifle and what was in my bag. And I wasnt even discreet! says Nikkhil.
While he was in the train, a few commuters did wonder about the rifle-like equipment on his shoulder. When he told them it was indeed a rifle they were scared and then furious at the poor security measures in the city.
The only time an official did question him was when he found pictures being clicked at Dadar station. A friend of mine who met me at the station took photographs on the cellphone. And that irritated this senior railway official who told us we were not supposed to take pictures of railway property! I asked him if he was even concerned about what I was carrying and he stammeringly retorted, That doesnt come under my department! A stunned Nikkhil naturally didnt have a word more to say to the official.
I was shocked! Its scary that I managed to go scot-free carrying a rifle and a huge bag in the most crowded places of Mumbai for over an hour-and-a-half. Forget about being questioned, there were no metal detectors, no checking junction, numerous unmanned entries everywhere... basically nothing in the name of even basic security measures.
He adds, Its really sad that the tears of 26/11 havent even dried up and our politicians are only making us happy with diplomatic changes in the leadership, but not making anyone accountable for the still so appalling conditions of our internal security. All Id like to say is please dear politicians dont only look at the external enemy, but also at the security problem within. We certainly do not feel safe. This operation surely is an eye opener and kudos to Nikkhil! We can only hope the concerned authorities do take note of this.
