We quietly support each other: Rohit and Ronit Roy
When we meet, it’s more about us and our family; we hardly discuss work,” say Rohit and Ronit Bose Roy, who have been each other’s biggest cheerleaders throughout life. They have been in the same profession for over 30 years and even played onscreen brothers in projects like Kaabil (2017) and Sarrrkkar: Risshton Ki Ankahi Kahani (2005-06). While they don’t always discuss scripts before signing a project, they share a great bond and are each other’s sounding boards. On Siblings Day today, the brothers, who have “gotten closer post COVID”, speak to us about their cherished bond and more.
‘Have started talking more in the last four-five years’
Rohit says that they have got closer post COVID, adding, “In the last four-five years, we have started talking more.” Ronit adds, “It does not matter if your sibling is in the same industry or not, but it is important to have a sibling. At the end of the day, when nobody is around, at least your sibling is there. I am so proud to have Rohit as my brother.”
Asked about whether they consult each other before taking up a project, Ronit says, “We don’t really discuss each other’s work. Both of us know how to handle our work, and our styles are very different.”
Rohit says, “When we meet, it is more about us and the family and never about our work. It’s only recently that we have started asking each other (about work) occasionally.”
Ronit feels it is a plus “being in the same profession.” Rohit adds, “The plus of being in the same industry is that we understand each other’s zone. I tell him what not to do and he advises me what I should. Every time I think about writing a film or a show, the first thought is to cast Ronit. We quietly support each other and just being there for each other is enough. You understand the dynamics of the profession, saare utar aur chadhav.”
Having worked in TV for decades, did they ever feel competitive? They say in unison, “Never!” Rohit adds, “For the longest time, we have been asked this question. But we have never had any competition.”
We don’t meet for days and yet, nothing changes between us: Ronit
There are times when we don’t meet for days, but nothing changes between us. Like all brothers, we have a lot of love, and we also fight a lot. Both of us want the other to do well, be in good health and succeed more.
We lost our father very early; I was hardly 14-15 and Ronit became that protective father figure in my life. It has increased of late, and that credit goes to our wives (Neelam and Manasi). They have made sure the family’s bond remains strong. After a point in life, you realise that your best friend is your sibling. I would rather spend time with Ronit than go out and party with 100 people. We are planning something special for Ronit’s 60th b’day in October. Hopefully, it’ll be something he’ll cherish all his life. I feel that families who spend time together end up creating a bond. We are the Bose Roys, before being Rohit or Ronit
