Reviving Memories: Revisiting the iconic 90's show ‘Chandrakanta’; a look at the cast, storyline and more

Chandrakanta is an Indian fantasy TV show inspired by Devaki Nandan Khatri's 1888 novel with the same title. It aired from 1994 to 1996 and was crafted, scripted, produced, and directed by Nirja Guleri.

Chandrakanta is a TV show that portrays eternal love amidst the conflict and animosity between the Naugarh and Vijaygarh Kingdoms. Virendra Singh (portrayed by Shahbaz Khan), the Prince of Naugarh, and Chandrakanta (played by Shikha Swaroop), the Princess of Vijaygarh, share a deep and passionate love for one another.

Chandrakanta’s lead actress Shikha appeared in several other TV projects the show. She was seen in shoes like Ramayan, Policewala Gunda, Awaaz De Kaha Hai. She managed to win many hearts with her various roles in the industry. However, the actress has been away from TV since a while now.

The show faced controversy when the channel removed it from the air in 1996, leading the producers to take legal action for reinstatement. Initially focusing on Chandrakanta's quest for her prince, the series shifted to Sabiya's story. The show was relaunched in 1999 but halted production again due to financial issues. In the final episode, Chandrakanta was abducted by Shivdutt.

Mamik Singh portrayed Deva, Shahbaz Khan played Kunwar Virendra Vikram Singh, and Shikha Swaroop was Princess Chandrakantaa in the series. Javed Khan appeared as Tej Singh, Mukesh Khanna as Janbaaz, and later as Meghavat. Vijayendra Ghatge acted as Sumer Singh, Parikshit Sahni as Maharaja Surendra Singh, and Pankaj Dheer as Shiv Dutt. Durga Jasraj played Rani Kalawati, Rajendra Gupta as Pandit Jagannath/Shani, and Akhilendra Mishra as Kroor Singh also known as Yakoooo. Irrfan Khan portrayed Badrinath/Somnath, while Krutika Desai Khan took on four roles as Sabhya, Ramya, Amba, and Jwala. Sonika Gill appeared as Amrapali's mother, Anu Dhawan as Tara, and Kalpana Iyer as Dum Dumi Maai/Sultana.

Shikha Swaroop is originally from Delhi and was born on October 23, 1970. She began her modeling career while in college. Shikha gained recognition by winning the Femina Miss India International title in 1998. Her story serves as an inspiration to countless individuals who aspire to achieve their dreams and pursue their passions.
