Ramayan creates world record with 7.7 cr viewership; here's how the re-run created a nationwide craze

The decision to telecast the Ramayan again in the midst of lockdown has got huge support from the fans. Even after 33 years, people see the same old craze and eagerness to see Ramayan. Ever since Ramayan has started telecast again, the show has remained at number one in TRP and now created a world record. Here’s how it has clicked with the audience once again.

World record

The lockdown period has done wonders for the channel airing the re-run of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan. According to a tweet on the national channel’s official Twitter handle, Ramayan’s rebroadcast has smashed viewership records worldwide and it has become the most-watched entertainment show all over the world with 7.7 crore viewership on April 16th.

First episode re-run viewership and response

Initially, when Ramayan aired its first re-run episode, that week it garnered 170 mn viewership. Telly viewers have welcomed the re-run of Ramayan during the 21-day lockdown. After the first episode was aired, ecstatic audience couldn't stop praising the iconic show. Several of them took to Twitter to share interesting anecdotes. There were some who got nostalgic, and there were others who stressed on the relevance of having such shows around on the small screen.

Re-run announcement

Prasar Bharti CEO Shashi Shekhar had confirmed the return of Ramayan and Mahabharata on the small screen. Ha had then announced in a tweet that Ramayan will air from March 28, Saturday onwards. Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and B R Chopra’s Mahabharata made their way to the television screens during the late 1980s to mid-1990's. They were a treat to the audience and widely enjoyed by all on Sundays.

Ramayan actors receiving huge fan-following

Ramayan’s lead actors Arun Govil, Sunil Lahri and Dipika Chikhlia (Ram, Lakshman and Sita) have also come into the limelight ever since the re-run episodes have gone on-air. The actors are also equally thrilled with all the fan love and responses they have been getting.

Each and every episode was discussed on social as netizens took great interest in talking about it. Be it Lakshman’s ‘moorchit’ episode to feminism debate, Ramayan’s every episode trended on social media.

Mythological shows doing great

Not only Ramayan, people are also vested in Mahabharat. Draupadi’s ‘cheer-haran’ scene was much discussed on social media. BARC reports also shared that the considerable numbers of viewership included kids watching these shows with their grandparents. Other iconic shows like Buniyaad, Shaktimaan, Shrimaan Shrimati and Dekh Bhai Dekh are also doing great on the TRP charts.

Comeback of Doordarshan

The once hardly noticed channel, which had almost lost touch with the youth, has made a name yet again owing to the re-run of the show. Viewers, who were vested in the saas-bahu sagas, fantasy thrillers and reality shows, are all now hooked to the channel catching up on all the re-runs of these re-runs. Viewers are now enjoying those good old days and taking a walk down the memory lane.
