Kanwar Dhillon: The heart of Baisakhi will always begin with food, followed by music and dance
For actor Kanwar Dhillon, Baisakhi is rooted in the simple joys of food, music and dance—elements he believes define every Punjabi celebration.
“Wherever Punjabi celebrations are concerned—be it Baisakhi or any other festival—food, music and dance play a very important role,” he says. “For me, the heart of Baisakhi will always begin with food, followed by music and dance. That’s truly the soul of Punjabi culture.”
He also underlines the importance of preserving traditions in a fast-paced world. “These traditions have been going on for years, and we must continue them. The baton has to be passed on, and the learnings must reach every generation,” Kanwar adds.
For him, the festival is equally about connection and shared moments. “In today’s busy life, these are the moments that slow you down and make you truly enjoy life. It’s a beautiful feeling to celebrate together,” he shares.
Though he grew up in Mumbai—where Baisakhi isn’t celebrated on the same scale as in North India—his memories of Punjab remain close to his heart. “I have very fond memories of celebrating Baisakhi in Amritsar at my bua ji’s place. Those family gatherings and festive moments were very special,” he recalls.
Even as celebrations evolve, Kanwar believes the essence of the festival remains unchanged. “It may not be the same everywhere, but the spirit of Baisakhi is still alive—and that’s what makes it so beautiful,” he concludes.
