Ironically, I’ve been able to do international films, but in India it’s tough for me to get film opportunities: Mahir Pandhi
Actor Mahir Pandhi has been part of television for several years now, with shows like Vanshaj, Veer Hanuman – Bolo Bajrang Bali Ki Jai and Choti Sarrdaarni. Beyond television, Mahir has also been making his mark internationally, having worked on projects like Congrats! My Ex and now Daniel.
Sharing details about his latest international film, Mahir says, “The journey of Daniel started back in 2023. That was the year when my film Congrats! My Ex released worldwide on OTT, and Daniel became my second international film. It has been an important phase for me professionally.”
The actor also candidly spoke about the stark differences he has observed between the Indian and international film industries. “The differences are massive,” he says. “In India, casting is often not done purely for casting. Many times, it’s driven by marketing or star power — someone whose name can help raise finances for a project. My personal take is that casting in India is not honest.”
Mahir feels this directly impacts the quality and performance of films. “That’s one of the reasons we’re seeing a shift in theatrical revenues. The audience pulse has changed drastically in the last five years. OTT and newer mediums are definitely big contributors to this change,” he explains.
Speaking from personal experience, the actor adds, “It’s ironic that I’ve been able to do international films, but in my own country, it’s extremely tough for me to get film opportunities. I don’t have a godfather. Casting directors often have their own lobbies, which leaves very little room for genuine craft and real talent to be identified.”
