The 1.2 km funicular service at Malanggad (Haji Malang) in Kalyan was inaugurated by BJP MLA Kisan Kathore on Sunday, marking a major milestone for devotees visiting the hill shrine.

The climb that used to take nearly two hours on foot can now be completed in just about 10 minutes, making it much easier for elderly pilgrims, children, and those with health concerns.

Previously, devotees had to navigate around 2,600 steps to reach the shrine. The funicular now allows them to reach the top comfortably while enjoying the scenic views along the way.

The service can accommodate up to 120 passengers at a time, helping manage crowds efficiently during festivals and peak visiting periods.

To encourage pilgrims to use the new facility, the project contractor has announced that rides will be free for the first two days after the inauguration.

The project was first proposed in 2004 by MLA Kathore. Construction took nearly 13 years, and although completed last year, its launch was delayed until all safety clearances were obtained.

The funicular is expected to attract more visitors to the Malanggad region, benefiting local businesses such as guest houses, restaurants, and vendors selling flowers and garlands to pilgrims.
