From starting out as a waiter to his love story with wife Aparna; Laughter Chefs’ Harpal Singh Sokhi shares his journey

From humble beginnings as a waiter to becoming one of India’s most loved celebrity chefs, Laughter Chefs star Harpal Singh Sokhi recently opened up about his inspiring life journey in Farah Khan’s cooking vlog. Harpal shared heartfelt stories about his career, meeting his wife Aparna, and how love, determination, and family shaped his path to success.

How he became a chef

"When I was born in Kharagpur, every boy was expected to become an engineer," Harpal shared. "But no one thought of becoming a chef. I am only the third person from my town to have done hotel management." His decision broke stereotypes and paved the way for his culinary journey.

How he became a waiter

Harpal revealed, "We had a neighbor who did hotel management and got a job. He inspired me, saying, ‘You should also do hotel management and become a waiter.’" That advice marked the beginning of his career in hospitality, starting from the very bottom as a waiter.

4/8

How he thought of becoming a chef

Initially unsure about his path, Harpal experienced what he calls a divine realization. "I didn’t know anything about hotel management at first. Then, one day, I felt a divine calling that I have to become a chef and never think of anything else." That moment changed the course of his life.

How he met his wife

Recalling their first meeting, Harpal said, "I joined an international hotel in Nagpur as an executive chef. Aparna had just completed her IHM and was the assistant housekeeper there. We met and connected within days." This meeting blossomed into a beautiful love story.

What Aparna liked about Harpal

Aparna fondly shared, "Everything about Harpal ji! I was just a trainee then, and we used to meet often. Ours was a short four-month relationship before we decided to take it further." Their bond grew strong despite the brief courtship.

On their 2 States marriage

Being from different cultures, their marriage wasn’t easy. Harpal said, "My family was initially resistant because I am a Sardar and she is a Maharashtrian. But my aunt explained everything to my father, and he agreed quickly." They tied the knot in 1996, uniting two families and traditions.

How Harpal’s wife handles renovations

Harpal laughed while sharing, "I leave the house and come back to see what’s changed. Maximum times, the kitchen is demolished and, in seven days, it’s completely new!" Aparna’s love for home improvement never ceases to surprise him.
