Balika Vadhu 2 to Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi 3; Sequels of hit TV shows that failed to stand up to the viewers’ expectations

Sequels are not a thing of only films and web shows now but have become prevalent in the television industry too. The past few years have seen producers launch sequels of the shows that have seen successful first seasons. However, these sequels failed to impress the audience and saw a flop end to them. At the latest, it is Balika Vadhu 2 which went off-air after having a not so successful run. Here’s a list of a few other such TV sequels:

Shivangi Joshi, Randeep Rai and Samridh Bawa starrer Balika Vadhu 2 went off-air on February 22. The show was wrapped up in a mere five months run owing to low TRPs and likeability. It was the second season of Avika Gor-Avinaash Mukherjee’s long-running first season, which was one of the most loved TV shows. While the second season has come to an end within months, the first season ran for around 8 long years.

Shaheer Sheikh and Erica Fernandes’ popular show Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Aise Bhi, which was loved during the first two seasons failed to impress with its third season. The show didn’t make it to the hit list of TV shows and went off air within four months of run. The third season, which was released on the viewers’ demand couldn’t keep up with the high expectations of fans as well as the cast. Erica, who was unhappy with her character and storyline decided to quit the show, which ultimately led to the wrap up of the show itself. Unfortunately, Kuch Rang Pyaar Ke Asie Bhi 3 saw a controversial end to it.

Pooja Gor and Arhaan Behll’s Mann Ki Awaaz Pratigya was a super hit amongst audience during its first season. Owing to its popularity then, the makers came up with the second season in 2021, with the same cast. However, this time the show failed to strike the right cord of viewers’ hearts. Several tracks, generation leaps and a few more things were tried on to make the second season work. Alas! It didn’t do well and had to be shut down after it experienced low ratings for multiple weeks. The show was taken down after a span of five months.

The second season of Ekta Kapoor’s hit Kasauti Zindagi Kay featuring Parth Samthaan and Erica Fernandes in the lead roles wasn’t as loved as the first season. It managed to garner little attention from the audience. However, fate seemed to have had something else for it. It was just when the show was trying to survive that the pandemic hit and a lockdown was imposed. Following this, the makers decided to scrap it.

Sanjivani 2, which was a sequel of a super hit medical drama was concluded after a dip in numbers was noticed. Starring Surbhi Chandna, Gurdeep Kohli, Rohit Roy, Mohnish Bahl, Namit Khanna, Sayantani Ghosh and a few others, the show went off the air after seven months of its inception. The reason behind its shut down was dip in numbers.

Monalisa and Sheezan Mohammad starrer Nazar 2 went off air during the COVID-19 lockdown. The show had good ratings and was doing well on TV but couldn’t survive the pandemic and was taken down by the makers.

Khichdi, one of the most loved comedy series of Indian television, had its sequel too. However, the second season of the show couldn’t touch the audience’s hearts to an extent that the first season did. Khichdi aired on TV in April 2018, went off air in mere two months as it didn't receive expected ratings. The original series aired in 2002.

Jennifer Winget, Shivin Narang, and Ashish Chowdhry starrer Bayhadh 2 was launched amid much fanfare at a plush hotel. Considering the success of its first season, a huge press conference was conducted to commence the second season. However, it failed to impress the audience like the first one. Moreover, the COVID-19 lockdown added to its dipping TRPs. Later, the show was axed during the lockdown period itself.
