Baisakhi takes me back to my younger days: Mohitt Maalik
For Mohitt Maalik, Baisakhi celebrations serve as a gateway to his childhood. Recalling those nostalgic moments, the Kullfi Kumarr Bajewala and Azaad actor, who is gearing up for a big release later this year, says, “The festival always takes me back to my younger days. I always visited a gurdwara in Delhi with my mother. We would listen to kirtan, partake in langar, and engage in seva. I especially loved the karah parshad. Even today, I continue to cherish these traditions. I try to contribute in whatever small way I can. It’s a time to pray for good health and prosperity, and to express gratitude for all that we have.”
‘My son Ekbir accompanies me to the gurdwara’
Elaborating on his beliefs, Mohitt also spoke about what drew him to Sikhism. He shares, “It was my mother who introduced me to its philosophy—the values, the emphasis on selfless service to humanity. What I admire the most is its message of humility. Whether it’s Baisakhi or any other auspicious occasion, I make it a point to visit the gurdwara, spend some quiet time there, and meditate. I was deeply drawn to this philosophy because it helped me let go of my ego and grow into a better person. Watching people clean dishes, polish shoes, serve food, and engage in selfless service without expecting anything in return—that, to me, is the truest way to be human.”
The actor often takes his son Ekbir to the gurdwara but is mindful not to impose his beliefs on him. “I’ve never believed in forcing anything on anyone—whether it’s my religious views or values. What truly matters to me is that my child grows up to be a kind human being. I simply want to share whatever wisdom I’ve gained. I hope he becomes more spiritual than religious. He accompanies me to the gurdwara to seek Babaji’s blessings,” he says.
