Barry Williams opens up about offscreen romance with Maureen McCormick on The Brady Bunch

Years after The Brady Bunch was a cultural sensation, Barry Williams is bringing new light to his offscreen romance with co-star Maureen McCormick — and exposing that their connection was more than mere sibling-like chemistry.

In a repeat show of the podcast The Real Brady Bros, guest Christopher Knight (who played Peter Brady) did a repeat of one of the show's most memorable episodes, The Subject Was Noses, which originally aired on February 9, 1973. The episode contains the now-famous scene where Peter inadvertently punches Marcia in the face with a football, breaking her nose and causing her date — a popular jock — to stand her up.

When talking about the episode, Knight noted the apparent chemistry between Williams (Greg Brady) and McCormick (Marcia Brady) on set. "It did seem like she was dating someone very close to her on set," Knight joked, referencing the apparent chemistry between the two actors.

Williams, who is 70, acknowledged that there was more between him and McCormick than friendship at times. "It was kind of like on-again, off-again with Maureen and me over the years," he confessed. "There was always this little dance that was interrupted by hiatus."

Knight jokingly added that the pair seemed "a little bit close, a little bit less brother and sister," that week of filming. Williams joked, "You mean dreamy eyed?" and Knight responded, "Yeah. You guys, you were having a good week, I would say."

In spite of the on-screen romantic tension, Williams insisted that he kept a professional demeanor on location — particularly when McCormick was filming romantic scenes with other actors. "When she was faking being affectionate with other dudes and going on dates and all that, I just preferred to just stay out of the way and just let her do her work," Williams explained.

Nevertheless, he did ensure to be around during those times. "I always made it a point to be on set," he explained, suggesting his overprotective and maybe even slightly envious behavior during those scenes.

Though their offscreen romance never fully blossomed into something lasting, Williams and McCormick’s dynamic added a layer of real-life intrigue to The Brady Bunch — a show that continues to capture hearts more than 50 years after its debut.
