Geneva's hinterland is so rugged that you can enjoy some activities normally possible only far out in the wilds without straying too far from the city. The River Arve, which tumbles down from Savoy's mountains to meet the Rhone inside Geneva itself, is a great, remarkably convenient place to try white water rafting during the summer season, with courses rugged enough to thrill that are still safe for beginners.
From a base not far from Geneva's centre, rafters are kitted out with wet suits and paddles and driven upstream to face the River Arve's rapids. Clearing six waterfalls within eight kilometres, most trips end on Lake Geneva, conveniently close to the city.
