Trinity Church

A sublime, ground-breaking architectural beauty
Noteworthy for: Built by architect H. H. Richardson, Trinity Church was so influential that it spawned the Richardsonian Romanesque style, widely copied across North America.

Intimidating and ornate, Trinity Church stares down the excess of the shopping meccas of Newbury and the Prudential Center. Once you pass under the church's sombre stone arches, however, you're greeted by a glorious jewel box interior that makes everyone feel that bit more divine.

Gemstone light shines through stained glass windows designed by John La Farge, whose murals also grace the church's interior, lifting the gaze of visitors to its ruddy, gilt-bordered images. There are also some British touches in this most American of churches, with four windows designed by pre-Raphaelite Edward Burne-Jones.

Popular with visitors, Trinity is still very much a living church, popular with people who come to pray and meditate as a time out from the bustle of central Boston.
