Uttarakhand: No Inner-line permit required to visit Milam glacier

It is reported that the ITBP (Indo Tibetan Border Police Force) has chosen to eliminate the necessity for an inner-line permit for tourists, trekkers, and mountaineers visiting the Milam glacier, which is a popular destination in Uttarakhand's district. This requirement has been in place for many years, and was seen as a reason to deter tourism in the region.

Referring to this, Munsiyari Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Yashbir Singh stated that the ITBP has instructed its personnel to permit all tourists to visit the Milam glacier without requiring the need to provide an inner-line pass. He further added that they had received a letter from Robin Kumar, Deputy Commandant of the ITBP's 14th Battalion, informing them of this decision due to its adverse impact on tourism.

The ITBP's decision to waive the inner-line permit requirement for tourists and adventure enthusiasts heading to the Milam glacier was prompted by a request from the Pithoragarh district administration last month.
The SDM further added that the ITBP received their request on September 15, asking them to lift this restriction in accordance with a letter issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in October 1993.
Earlier, the ITBP had adhered to the practice of not allowing individuals to proceed beyond Lilam, which is located around 12 km from Munsiyari, without an inner-line pass due to safety concerns related to landslides and road closures.

As for the Milam glacier, it’s situated around 61 km away from Munsiyari. In response to mounting pressure from the administration, traders, tourists, and the MHA letter, the ITBP has now decided to ease this regulation. This decision will actually benefit researchers, trekkers, and ordinary tourists who are eager to explore the high Himalayan region.
