South Korea to open peace-themed hiking trails in the Demilitarised Zone from April

The Korean Demilitarised Zone or the DMZ is one of the most globally renowned heavily militarised borders in the world. Established in 1953, the Demilitarised Zone separates North Korea from South Korea, and symbolises an agreement between the two countries.

The DMZ is one destination that is on the wishlist of anyone visiting South Korea; people are simply so curious about this border destination. As per the recent reports, come April 21, 2023, 11 peace-themed hiking trails along the Demilitarised Zone will be open to the public.


These hiking trains will be in the cities of Ganghwa, Gimpo, Goyang, Paju, Yeoncheon, Cheorwon, Hwacheon, Yanggu, Inje and Goseong.


The DMZ is approximately 250 km long and 4 km wide, and is filled with barbed wire fences, watchtowers, and armed soldiers from both sides. It’s definitely not completely demilitarised as we can see.


For the longest time, visitors to the DMZ were allowed very heavily restricted visits. The situation is still the same but now, with activities like hiking and other guided tours, one will be able to learn a lot more about the history of the two countries and their culture and nature.



A number of guided tours in the DMZ are history and nature-based. Several areas along the DMZ also receive many species of migratory birds every year. This attracts a number of nature and wildlife enthusiasts. With the opening of several more places, visitors will have more options.
