Northeast India’s off-beat gems: 6 destinations set to shine with new investment
Northeast India, over the years, has been growing into an increasingly popular travel destination. Now, in a major push to promote sustainable tourism and relieve pressure from overcrowded spots, the Indian government has sanctioned nearly INR 800 crore to help develop lesser-known tourist locations across the region. These projects aim to boost local economies, create jobs, and showcase the rich cultural heritage of the states involved, while promoting a more balanced spread of visitors.
Here are some of the highlights:
Nathula Border, Sikkim – INR 97.37 crore
Located on the Indo-China border, Nathula offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance. The recently approved funding aims to enhance the experience for visitors, providing better access to the picturesque landscapes and the chance to witness the military ceremony that takes place at the border. Sikkim’s cool winters and breathtaking views of the snow-covered mountains make this an unmissable destination.
51 Shakti Peethas Park, Tripura – INR 97.7 crore
It's one of the most important pilgrimage circuits in Hinduism. With the latest development, devotees and culture enthusiasts alike will be able to explore a blend of spiritual significance and architectural marvels, and hopefully, better amenities and tourism infrastructure will be in place very soon. The development of this park will likely attract both domestic and international travelers interested in religious tourism.
Loktak Lake, Manipur – INR 89.48 crore
Loktak Lake, known for its floating islands, is one of Manipur's most iconic landmarks. With the approval of significant funding, the lake is set to become more accessible while preserving its natural beauty. Tourists will be able to engage in eco-tourism activities, including boating on its serene waters, and witness the lifestyle of the local fishing communities who live on the floating islands.
Umiam Lake, Shillong, Meghalaya – INR 99.27 crore
Umiam Lake in Shillong, sometimes referred to as the "Lake of No Return," provides tourists with a peaceful retreat in verdant surroundings. The allowed funds will be used to upgrade the lake's surroundings, making it a fantastic location for water sports, nature hikes, and cultural events. This will also increase the lake's appeal as a major Northeast Indian tourist attraction.
Assam State Zoo, Guwahati – INR 97.12 crore
A renovation is planned for the Assam State Zoo in Guwahati, with the aim of enhancing wildlife conservation initiatives and also drawing ecotourism. It is expected that better animal welfare facilities, interesting visitor experiences, and more educational initiatives will be implemented to enhance visitor's experience. The zoo is a great place for nature enthusiasts because of its position in the foothills of the Himalayas.
Siang Eco-Retreat, Arunachal Pradesh – INR 46.48 crore
The project will unleash the region's potential and develop it for adventure, ecotourism, and cultural tourism, according to reports. Apart from eco-friendly accommodations, nature hikes, and cultural exchanges with the Adi community, the retreat will also provide excellent adventure activities including river rafting, kayaking, trekking, and camping.
