The researchers believe that the aforementioned items were used by the people during rituals. It is also believed that the cave was seen as a portal to the underworld and that several occult practices took place inside the cave.
The presence of the human skulls suggested necromancy, a practice of communicating with the dead. Several ancient texts from the region have also mentioned the practice of necromancy during the Late Roman Period by the Roman pagans. The cave also has an underwater spring which was believed to have healing properties.
The cave: Te'omim Cave is also known as the Twin Cave. During the time of the Romans, this cave was used as a hideout by guerillas. The cave played an important role during the Bar Kochba Revolt. Several evidences of it was later discovered by archaeologists.
