The Austrian government has issued a nationwide appeal for travelers to postpone their journeys due to the extreme weather. Snowfall is occurring at unusually low elevations, down to 700 meters (2,300 feet), with forecasts predicting up to 200 centimeters (79 inches) of snow at higher altitudes over the next four days.
The situation is compounded by heavy rain alerts in southern Germany, Austria, and the Czech Republic. These areas are under red alerts due to the anticipated intense rainfall, which threatens to exacerbate flooding risks. The dramatic shift from recent weather patterns is evident, as less than a week ago, parts of Switzerland experienced unseasonal heat. Now, up to 45 centimeters of snow is expected in eastern regions above 1,600 meters, highlighting the rapid change in weather conditions.
In France, temperatures have plummeted to -16°C (3.2°F) at the Aiguille du Midi in Chamonix, accessible via the country’s highest cable car. This stark contrast comes after a summer of intense heat waves across the Mediterranean region, illustrating the volatile nature of recent weather patterns.
The UK is also experiencing freezing temperatures, while Bavaria is dealing with torrential rains. These extreme conditions underscore a broader trend of increasing frequency and intensity of severe weather events, driven in part by climate change. The phenomenon of extreme weather, including violent storms and significant flooding, is becoming more common as global climate patterns shift.
Travellers across Europe should remain vigilant and prepared for potential disruptions as this cold weather system continues to affect the region.
