The incident happened along Sangla-Chhitkul link road, which is located near Basteri. The dead tourists are from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Rajasthan. The injured tourists are from Delhi, and Mohali, while another injured person was reported to have been from Kinnaur.

People are seen taking refuge indoors in the video, but those travelling in the tempo traveller were caught right in the middle of the disaster.
Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister, Jairam Thakur expressed grief, and tweeted, "It is very sad that a vehicle carrying tourists came under its grip, in which nine died and two injured and one passerby got injured. May God grant peace to the departed souls and strength to the bereaved family.”
