Ladakh’s administration in association with the Indian Institute of Astrophysics is going to promote astro-tourism in the village of Hanle in the Union Territory. Hanle has now been declared as a dark sky sanctuary, which would offer tourists an unequivocal dark sky experience here. The village of Hanle is located in the Hanle river valley.
The announcement that Hanle is now a dark sky sanctuary, was made at a high-level meeting by Pawan Kotwal, Principal Secretary (Planning, Development and Monitoring Department), Ladakh. Hanle happens to be the location for the highest astronomical observatory in the world. The Army has promised to extend all cooperation to develop Hanle as a dark sky sanctuary.
According to Kotwal, three Army officers have also been appointed as wildlife wardens, for the protection of wildlife in the region. Since, the region is dealing with attacks on rare species and birds by wild dogs. This is especially true for Changthang, where there are ground-nesting birds.
Dark Sky Sanctuaries or Parks are definitely unique to India, and its tourism should be explored. At Hanle, you will find yourself looking up at the illuminated sky, leaving a lasting impression. All astro enthusiasts must explore dark sky destinations.
