As per the latest development, archaeologists have unearthed a 1,200-year-old estate in Israel’s southern Negev desert. It showcases unique underground structures which helped the owners of that time beat the summer heat, reports added.
Reports add that the vast property is believed to have been owned by a wealthy landowner, which features a courtyard, has four wings along with several rooms. While the floors and walls are adorned with finely coloured frescoes in one of the wings, the other rooms feature huge ovens that were likely used for cooking. In this area, shards of decorated glass serving dishes have also been discovered.
However, reports further add that the most striking feature of the mansion are the subterranean stone vaults which were likely used to store items at cooler temperatures, and escape the harsh heat during summers. Then there was an opening from the vaulted rooms, which also led to a cistern where cold drinking water could be accessed by the residents.
Further, Eli Eskosido, the director of the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), added that the discovery generated interest and excitement among the local community, and that the Authority for the Development and Settlement of the Bedouin are planning to conserve and exhibit the finds to the general public.
The IAA also added that the public would be able to access the site for free tours, including family digging and sieving activities.
