Can a Cheetos packet ruin your popular tourist spot? The reality is worse than you think

When you are done eating your beloved chips, how do you discard the packet? Trash bin will be your instant answer, although we can’t ignore the fact that many among us wouldn’t mind throwing it away carelessly anywhere. Now, how about carrying out this irresponsible behaviour in a popular spot? You know the answer.

Just like that a discarded bag of Cheetos landed in the iconic tourist spot in New Mexico, the Carlsbad Caverns, an ancient cave. This irresponsible behaviour has caused an ‘ecological crisis,’ prompting scientists to take immediate action to control the damage. Although strict regulations are in place dictating only water to be allowed inside the cave, an irresponsible tourist managed to sneak a Cheetos bag in the caves, eventually triggering a chain of events, which as per the reports, disrupted the delicate cave ecosystem.

With regard to this, Carlsbad Caverns National Park took to social media to share the incident, and elaborated how throwing away such things carelessly might be thought of as an insignificant action from a human perspective, its impact on the cave’s ecosystem has been significant. You may ask how?

Experts elaborate that the chain of events does not stop here. This is because the humidity from the cave causes the processed corn snacks to soften. This created an ideal environment for the growth of fungi and microorganisms. The nutrients from Cheetos soon started to attract cave dwellers, such as crickets, mites, flies, and spiders, causing the damage to spread throughout the cave.

Mould then started appearing on nearby surfaces. It then starts to emit a foul odour in the decomposition cycle. The park rangers, however, responded quickly and spent 20 minutes carefully removing mould and microbial debris from the delicate cave surface. They found that while some species are native to caves, many of the fungi and microorganisms that thrived on the Cheetos are not, and are posing a major threat to the natural environment.

In response to such events, Park officials reiterated the policy "Leave no trace" and warned tourists that the cave is not a trash can. Even small items such as gum wrappers, tissue paper, and candy bags can have far-reaching effects on the ecosystem. Social media users expressed their frustration and disbelief at this careless behaviour. Many people condemned the lack of consideration for nature.

Carlsbad Caverns is home to the largest single cave chamber in North America by volume. Formed millions of years ago when sulfuric acid dissolved limestone and created vast underground passages. The event highlights the importance of responsible tourism in protecting pristine and irreplaceable natural wonders.
