As reported earlier, the app was launched in December last year, and is currently available at three airports, including Delhi, Bengaluru and Varanasi.
As for the app, it’s an initiative launched by the Ministry of Civil Aviation for a biometric boarding system using facial recognition technology (FRT). It’s a voluntary facility for air travellers to facilitate their travel and hassle-free experience at the Indian airports. It allows passengers to eliminate the need for verification of ticket and ID at multiple touch points and to enjoy a hassle-free experience.
If reports are to go by, in the Digi Yatra process, there is no central storage of passenger's personally identifiable information (PII). Reportedly, all the data of the passengers are stored and encrypted in the wallet of the passenger's smartphone, which is shared only for a limited time duration with the airport of travel origin, where their Digi Yatra ID is validated. The data is taken from the system within 24 hours of flight.
