Reports have it that around two million unvaccinated people in Austria have been placed into lockdown as the country faces a surge in cases. Referring to this, Chancellor Alexander Schallengerg stated that they are not taking this step lightly, and that it was the need of the hour.
Reportedly, unvaccinated people in Austria will only be allowed to leave home for limited reasons, like working or buying food. If reports are to go by, around 65 percent of Austria's population has been fully vaccinated, which is one of the lowest rates in Western Europe.
Meanwhile, the country has also witnessed a seven-day infection rate of more than 800 cases per 100000 people, which is also one of the highest in the region.
According to the reports, Europe has once again become the area that has been most seriously affected by the pandemic, resulting in many countries imposing strict restrictions and warning of rising cases.
The measures that have been put into place to prevent the spread of the virus, which came amid growing pressure on the nation's hospitals, will last for 10 days initially.
However, children under the age of 12 and those who have recently recovered from the virus will be exempted from the said rule.
