As per this report, the city of Kolkata recorded the least number of cognisable offences per lakh population among other major cities in India. Following Kolkata is Pune in Maharashtra and Hyderabad in Telangana. For those unaware, cognisable crimes are those crime cases that are registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Special Local Laws (SLL). Read less

What does this mean for domestic and international travellers?
While no city is devoid of crime, Kolkata gives a ray of hope to travellers when it comes to be able to travel in a somewhat peaceful environment, as compared to other cities of course. Low levels of violent crime in the city is probably one of the most reassuring things for a traveller.
