New FASTag rules to take effect from August 1: Key changes and guidelines

Starting tomorrow, August 1, a series of new regulations regarding FASTag usage will come into effect, requiring users to update their accounts to avoid potential inconveniences at toll plazas. The changes are part of an effort to streamline toll collection, reduce congestion, and enhance efficiency on national highways.

One of the most significant changes involves the Know Your Customer (KYC) process. FASTag accounts that are five years old or older must be replaced starting August 1. Users are advised to check the issuance date of their FASTag accounts and seek replacements from their issuing authorities, as these old accounts will become invalid. Additionally, accounts that are at least three years old will need to renew their KYC details. The deadline for completing this process is October 31. Failure to comply with the new KYC requirements could result in the blacklisting of the FASTag accounts.

Another notable change includes the mandatory linking of the FASTag account to the vehicle's registration number, chassis number, and the owner's phone number. This update aims to curb the misuse of FASTags, which previously allowed the same account to be used for multiple vehicles. From April, it became mandatory to use one FASTag account per vehicle. Additionally, users must upload photos of the vehicle's front and side to complete the linking process. For those purchasing new vehicles from August 1 onward, the registration number must be updated within three months of purchase.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) recently announced updated guidelines mandating that vehicles without FASTags affixed to their windshields will be required to pay double the standard toll amount. This directive is part of a broader initiative to encourage the widespread adoption of FASTags, a move aimed at streamlining toll collection processes, reducing waiting times, and minimising traffic congestion at toll plazas. These new guidelines will be implemented across all toll plazas on national highways throughout India, reinforcing the government's push towards a more seamless and digitised transportation infrastructure.
