Word to the wise: Make sure you find out when the last boat returns from your destination to avoid getting stuck on an island, and remember to pack mosquito repellant too.

Many portenos come to Tigre on the weekend to escape the city. It is an area of outstanding natural beauty made up of a series of islets in the Parana River delta.
Take a train from Buenos Aires leaving from Estacion Retiro for Tigre. A short walk from the train station is the Estacion Fluvial (Mitre 305) where you can catch a boat ride to one of the various islands. People come here to hike, kayak, swim, fish or just relax.

In Tigre town itself - also on an island - take a stroll along the Paseo Victoria, a promenade of pretty Victorian mansions along the waterfront, where many people come to sunbathe and picnic. Most restaurants are here too. Just outside the town is the Puerto de Frutos (Calle Sarmiento 160) along Rio Lujan, a former fruit market now selling handicrafts and local wares.
