There’s no getting around it: Detroit these days is infamous. Nicknamed “Motor City” because of the Ford Factory, Detroit’s economy is a barometer for the state of American industry, which is “not good” since Detroit’s heyday in the ‘50s industry has moved overseas, leaving Detroit drowning in debt. Detroit is one of the few cities to declare bankruptcy in America, and the news is dotted with stories of rising murder rates and pictures of gorgeously crumbling factories. But with the death of the old Motown comes the birth of another. Young people and artists attracted by both Detroit’s history and cheap housing prices have been flocking from all around the country. America’s only majority-black city, Detroit is a cornerstone of black culture, where Motown Records and the famous music style were born. Those who understand Detroit’s importance have come to revive the city, starting new enterprises of every kind.
No matter how you view it, Detroit still has a few tricks up its sleeve. So come to see a city in the midst of transformation, from its decaying factories to its hippy communes. Come see the city behind the headlines, and find one most locals only get to see.
