The Museum of Fine Arts or the Kunstmuseum in Bern is a treasure chest of artistic achievements and the display ranges from as many as 50,000 videos, sketches and photographs to some 3000 excellent sculptures and paintings. With celebrated names like Paul Klee, Pablo Picasso, Wassily Kandinsky, Fra Angelico and Jackson Pollock, it serves as an important landmark in the capital. The collection is an embodiment of the Surrealism, Impressionism and Expressionism movements and Swiss and Italian influences are conspicuous.
A revolution of the 18th century resulted in the establishment of a State Art Collection followed by the opening of the first ever museum in 1879. The Kunstmuseum is therefore the oldest art museum in Switzerland. It is the perfect platform for creators to map the ever-changing trends in art and the museum’s perpetually evolving nature has earned it a global reputation. For further research there is also a 200-year-old library that is run by Bern University’s Art History Department along with the museum authorities. If you get hungry during your visit, there is an airy cafe inside the premises that serves sandwiches and local beer.
