Great Palace Mosaic Museum

This impressive museum, officially known as Büyük Saray Mozaikleri Müzesi, is tucked away behind the Blue Mosque. Although it is quite small compared to Istanbul’s other museums, the amount of mosaics inside is staggering.
Unearthed over several years of excavations in the 20th century, these mosaics were formerly part of a palace courtyard built during the early 4th century during the days of Constantine the Great. After 1,700 years the colours are not near as vivid as the mosaics of Hagia Sophia, but the scenes depicted are more impressive. Mythical creatures and dragons, intriguing battle scenes involving both humans and various animals, and captivating images of what must have been daily life back in 300 A.D.

Get Cultured: This small museum packs more culture than anywhere else in Istanbul. It only takes about 20-30 minutes to walk through, but if mosaics are your thing, it is quite easy to spend longer.
