Following the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1960, the Dalai Lama and his entourage claimed asylum here. Ever since, McleodGanj is popularly referred to as The Little Lhasa. This Tibetan outpost has been built up over the last few decades and includes an impressive monastery with life size images of the Buddha, and is designed in a traditionally Tibetan style in terms of both architecture and design. In addition, it has become a major centre for the study of Buddhism and Tibetan culture with a range of holistic activities and courses and an inundation of travellers coming in to volunteer on community projects focusing on the refugee community. Every April, the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts organises a ten day festival, which is a great time to go for those who want to immerse themselves in the culture and lifestyle.Refrain from posting comments that are obscene, defamatory or inflammatory, and do not indulge in personal attacks, name calling or inciting hatred against any community.
