Word to the wise: Some festivals are so popular they sell out online in mere minutes. Plan ahead.
With such a jam-packed festival calendar, it can be difficult crafting a do-able itinerary. Top cultural highlights include Sydney Festival, a three-week January extravaganza featuring more than 100 free events throughout the city; foodie-haven Taste of Sydney and the famous Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras in March; Vivid, which transforms the city into a canvas of light from May-June; and Sydney Film Festival in June.

For music lovers, there's December favourite Homebake and January rock fest Big Day Out. Electro fans may to prefer to ring in the New Year at Field Day on 1 January and party on at Future Music in March, Creamfields in April and Park Life in September.
