Set at the mouth of the Guanabara Bay, Pão de Açúcar or Sugarloaf Mountain is one of the world’s most famous landmarks. A breathtaking cable car ride to the top of the mountain will stun you with panoramic views of one of the world’s most beautiful landscapes. Standing 394 metres high, Pão de Açúcar derives its colloquial name comes from the mountain’s resemblance to a concentrated sugarloaf. To reach the summit, passengers take two cable cars—the first ascending to the shorter Morro da Urca (standing 220 metres high) and the second ascending to Pão de Açúcar. The top of the mountain offers exapnsive views of the Guanabara Bay with the Botafogo beach to the North and Copacabana to the South. Be sure to check out the open-air cable car on display that was used for transportation in the 1930s.
