An area of Salford, Greater Manchester, Salford Quays makes for an interesting day trip. Originally part of the Manchester Docks that was once the third busiest port in Britain, this area is a result of a massive urban regeneration project that was taken up once the docks closed in 1982. In 1983, Salford City Council took ownership of re-developing the land and thus, giving rise to Salford Quays. Between 1986 and 1990 the infrastructure of the docks was modified to have all the makings of a modern city including roads, bridges and a promenade. The area has some significant and engaging landmarks, one of them being The Lowry. Standing at the end of Pier 8 and surrounded by the waters of the Manchester Ship Canal, the structure houses a theatre, studio, restaurant and cafes. If you are looking for some retail therapy, then there is no better place than the Lowry Outlet mall which houses the outlet stores of high-street brands including Marks & Spencer and Gap. The mall also has coffee shops and food chains among other facilities. Moreover, the Imperial War Museum North with its rich collection of historical artefacts, mainly from the wars that occurred during the 20th century, is worth a visit. With its unusual and captivating design, it also houses a large artefact of the New York 9/11 tragedy. MediaCityUK on Pier 9 is yet another significant landmark that has prominent media offices including the BBC.
Less than 6 km from Manchester city centre, Salford Quays is easily accessible by train and road.
