Australia’s oldest train station and Melbourne’s first railway station, the Flinders street station is undoubtedly among Melbourne’s most iconic landmarks today.Located at the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets and stretched along the Yarra River covering two city blocks, the station looks magnificent in its ornate baroque styled architecture that seems to plunge above the humdrum beneath. The front façade, with its series of clocks announcing the arrival and departure of trains, remains a famed meeting point for curious travelers, lost friends and uptown youngsters.
This landmark station boasts of millions of commuters transiting through its stairs, escalators, concourses, underpasses and platforms on any given day and remains quite busy throughout. However, there is a section of the building that is now cordoned off and desolately, left in a state of disrepair. Amongst these historically profound idle spaces are a ballroom, a gymnasium and a billiards room.
Regardless, the buildings ornate arches, defining both a historic and contemporary Melbourne, continue to shine as a true architectural spectacle in the city’s urban landscape.
