Qībǎo

Located in the western suburbs, just 18 km from Shanghai, Qibao has a history spanning over 1000 years. Qibao was built during Song Dynasty in 10th century. It flourished as a business centre until the Qing dynasty in 17th century. The name in Chinese means 'seven treasures'. The legend has it that there were seven treasures present in Qibao, but according to the history only four have existed. This picturesque town is littered with historic architecture and narrow alleyways laced along the water canals. Qibao boasts of traditional houses, gardens, temples, shops and restaurants. The well-restored Old Street in the heart of the town is the star attraction, which takes you back into ancient China. The ancient stone street still carries marks from the Song Dynasty. Some of the other highlights include the Qibao Temple from 10th century, Cotton Textile Mill, Shadow Puppet Museum and Zhou's Miniature Carving House. Wander along the narrow lanes and admire the architecture of traditional Chinese houses, or take a boat ride and glide on the waterways from Number One Bridge to Dōngtángtān. In Qibao it is all about soaking in the history of ancient China.
